DAY 17 22-MAY 22 Sunday Puente Viesgo Cantabria travel day to Ribadeo Galicia Region of Spain

Parador Ribadeo
It is the weekend after all and Sunday breakfast was so crowded that the full restaurant has been pressed into use as the breakfast room is maxed out. It seems the Spanish have had enough! Off we go for the weekend! They complied with a very strict lockdown but enough is enough! Some wear masks but many more don’t. I do notice that there are fewer staff and perhaps this is a similarity to the US. I suspect they will come back to work eventually but I notice things that are not as they were. There is a certain relaxing of standards. I hope they get that back. I.e.. Things not as clean as they were. Minor things such as dust etc.

With sustenance taken we were ready to load up and begin the next leg of our trip to Galicia. 1030 and we were ready to head out, bags packed and arranged. Paul really does have to pack lighter! We first went well up the mountain opposite to view the cuevas that Jane had explored in October 1918. Jane went in and Paul met a horse in the field beside the parking lot. The lot was full of cars awaiting the opening time and the same horse was standing next the fence line again the same as 3 years ago, with a foal!

Figueras - Opposite the Parador

Traffic is very light for a Sunday and as we made good time we opted to stop for lunch along the way as we were on track to arrive at 1530 too late for any lunch fare to enjoy at that time. We opted to stop in a quaint Puerto de Vega on the coast for fresh seafood. Trouble was it was a Sunday and many Spanish families had similar ideas. We had a simple salad to share and Jane had Merluza ala plancha and Paul had Merluza in salsa verde.

Merluza ala plancha (Jane) and in Salsa Verde(Paul)

At the Parador the chap asked if we wanted a luxury upgrade for 16 euros a night. Terrace balcony and all etc… SURE, for 16 Euros!

We stayed in the Parador Sunday evening as the weather was poor at best with ceiling barely 1000 feet and heavy drizzle. We were almost in the clouds! So we enjoyed bar snacks for our evening meal instead of searching for an establishment after driving so far during the daytime. In our room we watched Netflix The Bohemian Rhapsody Movie about Queen. An early night for a change.

  1. I believe you meant 2018... Jane had explored in October 1918.
