OVERVIEW TO BLOG and OUR TRIP TO ESPAŇA 2022



 
Well, our trip to Espaňa has been scheduled, delayed, revised, re-booked and ultimately until the world situation evolved post COVID 19 pandemic and finally planned for the late spring of 2022. During the past two years, we celebrated our 50th and 51st wedding anniversaries in October 2020 and then in 2021; meaning we are rapidly approaching number 52 in October of 2022. As neither one of us (Paul nor Jane) are getting any younger, we felt it WAS ABOUT TIME TO revisit our adopted country on the Iberian peninsula.

We prefer to shy away from the tourist areas, so typically we take the path lest traveled however, we always try to take advantage of the state run hotel system: Paradors for our overnight stops.

    Jane here, it is the Thursday before we travel. We have not traveled far from home for 3 years! My apprehension is high. Make no mistake , I have always been adventurous, forward thinking and ready to go! For heaven’s sake I went to work in London when I was 18….a brave adventurous soul, spreading my wings. The last few years have been been challenging. First the cancer, which was dealt with, I will be 4 years free in September . Then we made a couple of trips to Spain after the chemo and everything went well. Why the apprehension this time? I don’t know. I am trying to get it under control and I will you keep you informed as to how it goes. The elephant in the room is the big C….COVID I mean. We are vaccinated and boostered. I don’t ever remember being so apprehensive. I know, I have used that word several times but am I afraid? I don’t think so. We need to break out of this self imposed isolation, to stop this fear or we will never leave home again! Elizondo was very healing on the first trip back after chemo. I hope it works again this time!

  DAY 17 22-MAY 22 Sunday Puente Viesgo Cantabria travel day to Ribadeo Galicia Region of Spain Parador Ribadeo It is the weekend after all and Sunday breakfast was so crowded that the full restaurant has been pressed into use as the breakfast room is maxed out. It seems the Spanish have had enough! Off we go for the weekend! They complied with a very strict lockdown but enough is enough! Some wear masks but many more don’t. I do notice that there are fewer staff and perhaps this is a similarity to the US. I suspect they will come back to work eventually but I notice things that are not as they were. There is a certain relaxing of standards. I hope they get that back. I.e.. Things not as clean as they were. Minor things such as dust etc. With sustenance taken we were ready to load up and begin the next leg of our trip to Galicia. 1030 and we were ready to head out, bags packed and arranged. We had not been back to España since May/June of 2022. We found affordable tickets and planned a 2 week + trip to the northern parts of Spain primarily in the Basque region to see both family and friends from out long ago lifetime in the North.

DAY 26 31 MAY 22 TUESDAY TRAVEL DAY LEAVING PLASENCIA TO PARADOR GUADALUPE Spain Parador Guadalupe & Cathedral After a cool Monday, Tuesday appears to be another hotter than normal spring day for here approaching 87F according to Weather Underground.com. Breakfast and then repack for our travels, we notice a throng of people hanging around reception. No, they were not all checking out to hold us up but they were awaiting the arrival of a huge motor coach (bus) for their tour. Even as we loaded up the car in the garage down on level -1, the mass of bus travelers came plodding thru the garage looking for the bus. NO WAY could a bus come down to this level via elevator, a gal from reception came running down to usher the herd to the exit door leading to the street. We drove into the lift and went thru the process,   to see when the doors opened that a car was attempting to enter into the Parador garage and a beer truck was parked to off-load supplies.
