DAY 8 13 May 2022 FRIDAY the 13th Baztan Valley

Maya town center
We had breakfast in the apartment and updated the blog during morning coffee following by some hand washing of things to hang to dry in this ABOVE Average warmth in the valley again.
Ma;ya Monument

Jane suggested to go to the village of Maya and have a look at the monument of the fortress now affixed to the hill overlooking the village below. It was one of the few fortresses making a stand against the Castillian invasion of 1512 after they had taken over Pamplona. It is quite famous here, they are a proud people these Navarrese of the Kingdom of Navarra. The battle of Maya was fought in 1813 by the French and British during the Peninsular War in the Maya Pass close to the village. It is atop a hill, no driving up there! Too far for my feet and legs.  I really wanted to see it but common sense prevailed!

Posada Elbete

The Maya Grist mill is closed during the week and only open for visitors on the weekends, besides, the mountain river is very low not having had a normal snowfall in the wintertime. The narrow streets of Maya are quite interesting and there is even a water attraction for the peregrinos(pilgrims) walking to Santiago de Compostela. You can fill up your canteen and remove your shoes/socks and bath your weary feet in the cool water for a few minutes. So we ended up taking pictures of the monument from down below as neither one of us wanted to try the 500 meter hike to the top.

We stopped at the Bar Resturante Ordoki but the car lot was FULL. And so we settled for the place just 3 doors away. The service and food were OK but not what we had expected. We don’t want to eat too much at lunch because we have reservations at the Posada tonight at 8:30PM. We are finally slowing down, we don’t have to be dashing everywhere all the time!

Zena tending bar

Soon it was siesta and blog time. As we had to kill

Zena came to say good bye.

time we did a quick run to the Simply store to have a look see followed by a walk to the Posada. Hana should be home for the weekend from school to visit with everyone.

As always, we had a terrific meal at the posada. They are only open for dinner Friday and Saturday and you have to make a reservation! Even Lunch is iffy! The place is always packed, if open, at mealtimes. The Spanish do love to eat out and the pandemic has been tough on them. They are ready to get back to normal.Z

It was so terrific to reacquaint ourselves with the kids. They are pretty awesome and threaten to come and visit us in Cocoa Beach!
