Surf Class Santander Beach

OK now that we done something different for a change like, EAT again, we are ready for a day in Santander. It took only 30 minutes and we were walking along the beach front where a surf school was holding class for about 30 kids. Waves were about 3 ft and gentle and a few experts were taking on the waves. Interesting to note that all wore wetsuits! Weather today is cool, by my standards, only about 64 F so I bet that water was freezing!

The beaches here are pretty and I love that there are wide boulevards to walk next to the beach. The Spanish use art to great effect, at the center of roundabouts and random  places in their cities. We saw a statue which looked like a giant snail on the beach, great for the kids to climb on with hand and foot holds. Another beach display looked like two pair of giant dice stacked together. Lots of people out walking with dogs, who roamed off leash but did not stray far from their people. Well mannered and polite, the dogs I mean, lol! One guy who looked like he could be from CB (long hair in a ponytail, scruffy, beachy) had an equally scruffy dog who bothered no one, wandered around the grassy area, greeted other dogs with a polite wag, waited until said dog peed and peed on top, just to emphasize that this was his area dammit but you are welcome!  Lol!

 Santander Beach

We drove back into the downtown and parked the car. Damn! Not the parking lot he was looking for!  We had been here before with Cheryl and Paul was convinced, he could find it again because it was underground parking and came up in a lovely Plaza. Nope, not today. So, we had a cup of coffee to tide us over. We got right back into the car and selected Santilla de Mar as a target for lunch, because quite frankly driving in the city is harrowing!

Off we went, the small town had a horde of tourist busses and cars and many restaurants were crowded and on the way to the Museo de Las Cuevas we found a good spot. The caves I refer to have ancient cave paintings and were discovered in Victorian times by a father and daughter. They became very famous and were in danger of being destroyed by the change in caves from all these people breathing! I believe we saw them before they were closed to the public, now  very few people are allowed in and only by appointment. I bet my niece Nadine could get us in if she applied a year in advance! However, they have this fabulous museum which has replicas of the paintings and is quite amazing.  Where we are staying in Puente Viesgo there are also pre historic caves which I visited last time we were here. We have been there before but our goal on this trip was ….food!

Santander Fish Market

On the end of town there was a horse riding facility and the horses were all lined up with snouts in the trough eating and adjacent was a very rustic looking restaurant and so lunch was found!! Menu of the day had a creamy rice dish with bacon and mushrooms that Paul wanted but he did not like the menu of the day options for the 2nd course. So Jane had her usual one plate from the menu and Paul got the Creamy rice, he order the Chuleta de ternera, the gal failed to explain that the steak came as a You Cook Your Own! All this lovely meat came accompanied by a little gas tabletop hot plate! He cooked andsaid it was fabulous!

Santilliana de Mar for Lunch

We headed back to the hotel because had our time in the natural spa circuit to enjoy. Jane said she felt pummeled afterwards.  The water was warm and comfortable. I used to love this but felt a bit out of control as my feet are unsure and sensitive and I felt off balance, 45 minutes was more than enough at our age, and we gave up the remaining 1+ hours.

That evening we walked over to the cafeteria and  really enjoyed our waiters attention and recommendations. Now I cannot exactly what we had and do not understand why Paul didn’t put it in here! It was however delicious!
